Two donkeys and a Saint is Davide Tisato’s new documentary about the story of resistance of the small community of Montegiovi (Grosseto), who defend their right to exist with humour and passion.
The rectory in Montegiovi, a small village in the hinterland of the province of Grosseto in Tuscany, is in danger of collapsing. After the authorities failed to take action, the inhabitants decided to take matters into their own hands: carrying the statue of Saint Catherine on their shoulders and accompanied by two donkeys, they set off on foot on 30 August for a two-week journey to Rome. Their goal is to get an audience with the Pope, to draw public attention to the problem and ask for help, bringing him letters from other small communities they meet along the way.
The journey to Rome, through villages and farms, tents and shelters, was filmed by director Davide Tisato, a native of Montegiovi, with cameras on his shoulders alongside the travellers. The story became the subject of his documentary Two Donkeys and a Saint, produced by Cloud Fog Haze Picture, with the executive production of Articolture.
